Adults 18 years and over:

One capsule should be taken three times a day before or during mealtimes up to and including an hour after food.

If you miss, forget to take a capsule, or it is more than one hour since your last main meal, you should not take the missed dose. If it is less than an hour since your last main meal, you should take the capsule as soon as possible.

Make sure you take a multivitamin at night time, every day for adequate absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K.

If your meal does not contain fat, you should not take dose of the medication, because Alli only works by blocking the absorption of fat that you eat.

Please do not exceed the maximum daily dose of: 3 capsules a day

Alli Slimming Capsules 84 Pack is ideal for those who have a body mass index of 28 or over and who want to boost their weight loss.

The capsules can help to boost weight loss by up to 50 percent a week, allowing you to achieve your desired results faster.

This is a non prescription weight loss supplement that contains orlistat as its active ingredient. It has been prescribed by doctors for many years and is now available to buy without a prescription. It is only available from pharmacies.

One capsule should be taken three times a day with each main meal, where it will block the absorbtion of fat in to the body.

Losing as little as 10 pounds or 5 kilos can make a big difference to your joints, reduce your blood pressure and blood sugar. Alli will help you lose the weight faster than ever before.

Not everyone will experience side effects when they take medication, however if you do they can include:

Alli capsules can cause severe allergic reactions such as fast heart beat, serious breathing difficulties, sweating, itching, rash, swollen face and even collapsing. If any of these reactions occur, stop taking the medication and seek medical assistance right away.

More serious side effects include severe stomach pain caused by gallstones, bleeding from the rectum, skin blistering and inflammation of the large intestine (diverticulitis) symptoms such as left hand side abdominal pain, fever and constipation. Other severe reactions include inflammation of the liver (hepatitis) symptoms such as stomach pain, liver tenderness, yellow skin and eyes and itching. Stop taking the medication and consult your doctor, if you get any of these serious side effects.
Other common side effects are anxiety, abdominal pain, wind, rapid bowel motions, oily or fatty stools, soft stools, incontinence, liquid runny stools and frequent bowel movements.

If you are concerned about these effects, or if the product affects you in any other way, stop using it and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Reading the following warnings carefully will help to ensure you are selecting an appropriate product.

  • Consult your pharmacist or doctor, if you don't lose weight after taking Alli for twelve weeks.
  • Alli should never be taken for more than six months.
  • In case you accidentally ingest too many capsules, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
  • The container should be tightly closed to protect the capsules from moisture.
  • The 2 sealed canisters that contain silica gel should not be swallowed but should be kept in the bottle in order to keep the capsules dry.
  • Consult your pharmacist or doctor if any of the side effects become bothersome or even get severe.
  • Inform your doctor that you are taking Alli capsules, when scheduled to take blood tests, since some effects can be detected in your blood including increases in some liver enzymes levels and effects on blood clotting, if you are taking blood thinning medication such as Warfarin.

Please read all packaging and the Product Information Leaflet before taking any new medicine and inform your doctor of medicines you are taking or intend to take.

How to take Orlistat

  • Orlistat capsules are taken one capsule up to three times daily if required.
  • They should be taken immediately before or up to one hour after meals.
  • If you have a low fat meal or skip a main meal there is no need to take Orlistat; it only works when you have eaten a meal containing dietary fat.
  • Orlistat should be used alongside a low-fat, calorie-controlled diet to produce the greatest effects and reduce adverse effects.
  • Do not exceed the dose of three Orlistat 120mg capsules daily. It will not increase weight loss but may increase undesirable side effects.

Orlistat 120mg capsules are available from THE Medical Online Doctor service, following a free consultation, to help aid healthy weight loss. To find out more about weight loss and see all the available treatments, see our Online Doctor Weight Loss page.

Orlistat is a generic version of the commonly prescribed item Xenical and a stronger version of the popular over-the-counter weight loss medication Alli. Orlistat 120mg capsules contain orlistat, which binds to dietary fat and stops up to one third of it from being absorbed. Orlistat 120mg capsules are the generic version of Xenical and are available now that the patent on Xenical has expired. When combined with a low calorie diet and exercise, Orlistat can help you to lose an extra 1lb for every 2lb you would lose by diet and exercise alone. In clinical trials, almost twice as many patients who received Xenical, achieved an average weight loss of 10 percent or more of their body weight in one year, compared to those on diet alone.

Orlistat is used to treat obesity; this is where you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or over. Orlistat can also be prescribed when your BMI is 28 or over and there are other risk factors present that make weight loss favourable.

Orlistat is taken up to three times daily, with or up to one hour after each main meal. If you eat a fat-free meal, you skip a meal or have a small snack instead, you do not need to take Orlistat as there will be no fat to absorb.

As Orlistat blocks the absorption of some dietary fats, it can also block the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins. The fat-soluble vitamins are A, D, E and K. If you are concerned about missing some nutrients or you already suffer with a deficiency in one of these vitamins, we advise taking a multivitamin at bedtime to replace any vitamins lost from your diet as part of your Orlistat weight loss treatment.

When combined with diet and exercise, Orlistat is usually effective in aiding weight loss. Weight loss should not be rushed and crash diets should not be used. Weight loss should be viewed as a steady process in order to do it in a healthy way and increase the chances of the weight staying off. A realistic target is around 1lb per week though this can vary from person to person depending on the situation.

You should only continue to take Orlistat if you are losing weight and your BMI is above 28. If you take Orlistat for 3 months and you do not lose around 5% of your body weight you should stop taking it. It can be retried again after 6 months. If your BMI drops below 28, Orlistat may no longer be appropriate and you should stop treatment. If you are losing weight and your BMI is above 28, you can take Orlistat for up to 2 years.

If you do experience side effects from Orlistat they may include abdominal pains, bloating or wind, the urgent need to open the bowels and oily, fatty, or liquid stools. These side effects are most common at the start of treatment and are most likely to occur after eating a high-fat meal. By restricting your intake of dietary fat to less than 15g per main meal you will decrease the chances of these side effects.

Orlistat should not interact with any of your other current medicines. You should discuss Orlistat with your GP before taking if you take warfarin, levothyroxine, or ciclosporin.

You may also find the following advice useful to help lose weight:

  • Always try to eat a wholesome breakfast, if it is missed the chances of you snacking increase greatly and results in a greater calorie intake.
  • Wholegrain foods contain lots of fibre and slow-release energy; try switching to these where possible.
  • Try to cut down your alcohol intake, it is very high in calories.
  • Try to find a low calorie snack you enjoy and can have as a treat to reward yourself.
  • When you start exercising, take it slow. If you start with a little and aim to increase as you become more fit you will enjoy it more and are much more likely to continue.

Xenical 120mg capsules are available from THE Medical Online Doctor service, following a free consultation, to help aid healthy weight loss. To find out more about weight loss and see all the available treatments, see our Online Doctor Weight Loss page.

Xenical 120mg capsules contain the drug orlistat. Xenical was first developed by Roche and became available in 1998. It has since been used safely for over 15 years to help people suffering with obesity to lose excess weight where dieting and exercise alone has been unsuccessful. Xenical capsules can be prescribed for patients who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or over, or 28 or over if there are other risk factors present such as heart disease, diabetes or smoking.

Xenical prevents around one third of the fat consumed as part of your normal diet from being absorbed. It does this by binding to dietary fat present in the gut and preventing it from passing through the gut walls into the bloodstream, instead it remains in the gut and passes through your system. Xenical capsules should be combined with a healthy, low calorie diet and exercise regime for maximum effectiveness. When used in this way it can help you to lose an extra 1-pound for every 2-pounds you lose naturally. In clinical trials, almost twice as many patients who received Xenical, achieved an average weight loss of 10 percent or more of their body weight in one year, compared to those on diet alone.

The patent on branded Xenical has now expired allowing you to get generic Orlistat 120mg capsules as well as branded Xenical. Orlistat is also available over-the-counter at a lower 60mg dose in Alli capsules.

You should take one Xenical 120mg capsule up to three times daily, with or up to one hour after each main meal. If you eat a fat-free meal, you skip a meal or have a small snack instead, you do not need to take Xenical as there will be no fat to absorb.

We advise our patients who take Xenical to also take a multivitamin with their weight loss treatment as it can also block the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins. The fat-soluble vitamins are A, D, E and K. It is especially important if you already suffer with a deficiency in one of these vitamins. We advise taking a multivitamin at bedtime to replace any vitamins lost from your diet as a result of taking Xenical.

When combined with diet and exercise, Xenical is usually effective in aiding weight loss. You should aim to lose around 5% of your body weight within the first 3 months of your treatment. Weight loss should not be rushed and crash diets should not be used. Weight loss should be viewed as a steady process in order to do it in a healthy way and increase the chances of the weight staying off.

After taking Xenical for 3 months you should have hit your target of losing 5% of you body weight. If you did not hit this target, Xenical may not be suitable for you and should be stopped. It can be retried again after 6 months if necessary. If your BMI drops below 28, Xenical may no longer be required and you should stop treatment. If you are losing weight and your BMI is above 28, you can take Xenical for up to 2 years.

If you do experience side effects from Xenical they may include abdominal pains, bloating or wind, the urgent need to open the bowels and oily, fatty, or liquid stools. These side effects are most common at the start of treatment and are most likely to occur after eating a high-fat meal. You should try to restrict your intake of dietary fat to less than 15 – 20g per main meal to decrease the chances of these side effects.

If you experience any adverse effects from taking your prescribed medicine it is important to let us know immediately. Please log in to your online account and message one of our healthcare professionals or alternatively call us on 0117 332 69 90. In a medical emergency you should contact the emergency services or go straight to your local Accident & Emergency.

Xenical should not interact with any of your other current medicines. You should discuss Xenical with your GP before taking if you take warfarin, levothyroxine, or ciclosporin.

If you have followed the above guidance and still find Xenical ineffective you may wish to see your GP to discuss alternative weight loss options. If you would like any advice, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your options.

As being overweight can often lead to other health complications we recommend you see your GP for a full health check up to ensure you are as healthy as possible.

About Weight Loss

Weight Loss Background

THE Medical Online Doctor service allows anyone struggling to lose the weight they require to have a private consultation with a doctor and receive the weight loss treatment they need in a safe and discreet manner.

Obesity is caused by having excess body weight, usually stored as fat, for your height and is defined as having a BMI over 30. It is widely known that excess weight leads to many long-term health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and joint problems. As well as long term conditions people who suffer with obesity may suffer with fatigue, lethargy and breathlessness, all of which can be helped by weight loss.

It is thought that more than a quarter of adults in England are obese (they have a BMI of 30 or over). It is widely recognised amongst healthcare professionals that obesity is an increasing problem that is growing at an astonishing rate. Losing excess weight with diet, exercise and weight loss treatment is important to avoid the many chronic health conditions that result from obesity.

What Are The Causes Of Obesity?

Obesity can be caused by a number of different factors. Eating a poor diet that is high in fats and sugars coupled with low amounts of exercise can cause weight gain and lead to obesity. Consuming more calories from eating and drinking than you burn off with physical activity over a period of time will normally cause you to gain excess weight. It can also arise from stress, hormone imbalances, side effects of prescribed medications and genetic factors.

The cause of weight gain can dramatically alter how easy it is to lose weight and which method will suit you the best. For example, weight gain due to a poor diet or lack of exercise will best respond to a healthier lifestyle whereas excess weight due to genetic reasons may be harder to lose and require professional advice and weight loss treatment.

Weight Loss Treatment

What Treatment Is Available?

THE Medical Online Doctor is also able to provide consultations for Xenical & Orlistat, prescription-only weight loss treatments. These prescription weight loss treatments contain orlistat, the same as Alli but at a higher dosage. Xenical, and generic Orlistat, are suitable for those with a high BMI (over 30 or over 27 if there are other risk factors) who cannot lose the required weight with diet and exercise alone. If you are struggling to lose weight with diet and exercise alone head to our Online Doctor to have a free consultation to see if you are eligible for the prescription-only weight loss treatment, Xenical or Orlistat.

The prescription weight loss treatments containing orlistat help to block one third of the absorption of fats consumed in your diet. As excess fats contribute to weight gain due to their high calorie content, taking prescription weight loss treatments can help you lose an extra 1lb for every 2lbs you lose through diet and exercise.

Non-prescription weight loss treatments, such as Alli and XLS-Medical, are available in our Weight loss section in the pharmacy. Weight loss supplements such as Alli and XLS Medical Fat Binder help to bind some dietary fat that you intake, preventing it from being absorbed and therefore reducing your calorie intake. Both are available from THE Medical to be taken alongside a calorie-controlled diet to help you lose more weight than dieting alone.

Most doctors agree that healthy diet and regular cardiovascular exercise is the best way to manage weight. But for some, added help might be needed to lose those extra few pounds. Many weight management strategies, with a healthcare professional’s approval, can be employed safely and effectively.

It is important to note that any weight loss method should be approached slowly and realistically. You are more likely to achieve significant and permanent weight loss if you plan well, set realistic goals and approach your target slowly. Determination is a must and having friends and family to aid you in your goal will greatly increase your chances of success.

Diet and Exercise

A tried-and-true-method, regular cardiovascular exercise (30 minutes, 5 times per week) and a healthy, balanced diet that is high in fibre is vital to any attempt at weight loss and a new healthier you.

Any new exercise regime should take into account of your current level of fitness. For those who have a relatively low level of fitness, small steps should be taken to slowly increase fitness to a level where you are able to complete 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity. Brisk walking can be an effective place to start with the aim of increasing the length and/or pace as your fitness level increases. Before starting a vigorous exercise regimen, you should consult your GP to ensure it will be safe and effective for you to begin, taking into account your current fitness level and state of health.

The average calorie intake of an adult male and female should be 2,500 and 2,000 calories respectively. This can be achieved by controlling the size of portions, increasing intake of vegetables and starchy foods and eating more slowly to prevent over-eating. By using the NHS Choices Eatwell Plate you can manage your meals to ensure that you achieve not only a calorie-controlled diet but also a nutritionally balanced intake.

Above all, the principle goal of weight loss is to burn more calories than you consume. Whether it be through diet and exercise, or with help from weight loss treatments, being smart about the calories you consume and burning off any extra calories being active is almost guaranteed to be effective in managing your weight.
