Apply Testim Gel only to healthy, normal skin.

Never apply Testim Gel to your genitals (penis and testes) or to skin that is broken or damaged and avoid contact with open sores, wounds or irritations. Apply Testim Gel at the same time each day (preferably every morning). Apply the contents of one (1) or two (2) tube(s) of gel on the shoulders and/or upper arms, every morning as instructed by your doctor. If you take a bath or shower in the morning, use Testim Gel after your bath or shower. Make sure that your shoulders and/or upper arms are clean and completely dry before putting on the gel. Open the Testim Gel aluminium tube by piercing the end of the tube with the top part of the cap. Squeeze the entire contents of the tube into the palm of your hand. Squeeze the gel out from the bottom of the tube towards the top. Apply Testim Gel only to your shoulders and/or upper arms as a thin layer. In this way your body will absorb the right amount of testosterone. Use a circular motion to rub the gel in to your skin for several seconds. Do this until no gel is left on the skin area. This process should be repeated with a second tube of Testim Gel by patients who have been prescribed a daily dose of testosterone 100mg. It is suggested that patients who require two tubes of gel each day use both shoulders (one tube per shoulder) and/or upper arms as application sites. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water immediately after application. This will also reduce the chance that the medicine will spread from your hands to other people. Let Testim Gel dry for a few minutes before you dress. This prevents your clothing from wiping the gel off your skin and ensures that your body will absorb the correct amount of testosterone. If you wash the application site within 6 hours after applying Testim Gel you may lower the amount of testosterone that is absorbed by your body. Therefore, wait at least 6 hours after applying the gel before showering or swimming to ensure that the greatest amount of Testim Gel is absorbed into your body.

Testim gel is a clear gel which contains testosterone. Testosterone is a male hormone. Testim gel is applied to your skin (shoulders or/and upper arms) and testosterone is absorbed directly into your body through skin. It then enters your blood stream and helps to raise your testosterone to normal levels. The type of testosterone delivered into your body by Testim Gel is the same as the testosterone produced in your body.

Testim gel is used to replace testosterone in men who do not produce sufficient natural testosterone, a condition known as hypogonadism. Testosterone is made naturally in your body in your testicles and help to product sperm and develop and maintain the male sexual characteristics such as a deep voice and body hair. It is also necessary for normal sexual function and sex drive. Testosterone also helps to maintain muscle size and strength.

Do not use Testim if you suffer or suspect you suffer from prostate cancer, breast cancer or are allergic to any of the ingredients. Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Take care and inform your doctor if: you have difficulties passing water, liver, kidney or heart disease, have high calcium levels, high blood pressure, suffer from migraines, suffer from heart or lung disease.

This medicine is for use by adult men only.

Always use TESTOGEL exactly as your doctor has told you. you should check with your doctor if you are not sure.

The recommended dose is 5g of gel (i.e. 50mg of testosterone) applied once daily at approximately the same time, preferably in the morning.

The daily dose may be adjusted by your doctor, on an individual patient basis, not exceeding 10 g of gel per day.

The gel must be gently spread onto clean, dry, healthy skin as a thin layer on the shoulders, arms or stomach.

After opening the sachet, the entire contents should be taken out of the sachet and applied immediately onto the skin. Allow the gel to dry for at least 3-5 minutes before dressing. Wash your hands with soap and water after applying.

Do not apply to the genital areas (penis and testes) as the high alcohol content may cause local irritation.

This medicine contains testosterone, a male hormone produced naturally in the body.

It is a hormone treatment in men used for problems related to testosterone deficiency as described in Section 2 (Take special care ...)

Like all medicines, TESTOGEL can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them:

Very common side effects may be experienced by 10 people in every 100
Because of the alcohol this medicine contains, frequent applications to the skin may cause irritation and skin dryness. Moreover, acne may occur.

Common side effects (between 1 and 10 people in every 100)

TESTOGEL may cause headaches, hair loss, development of painful, tender or enlarged breasts, changes to your prostate gland, diarrhoea, dizziness, an increase in blood pressure, changes to your mood, changes in laboratory test results (increase in the number of red blood cells in the blood, lipids), skin hypersensitivity, stinging and loss of memory.

Other side effects have been observed during treatment with oral or injectable testosterone: weight gain, changes of the salt in the blood, muscular pain, nervousness, depression, hostility, breathing problem during sleep, yellowing of the skin (jaundice), changes in the results of tests that check how the liver is working, seborrhoea, sex drive changes, reduction in the number of sperm, frequent or prolonged erections, blockages that may make it difficult to pass urine, water retention, hypersensitivity reactions.

If any of the side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.

Take special care with TESTOGEL

Before starting any treatment with TESTOGEL, your testosterone deficiency must be clearly demonstrated by clinical signs (regression of masculine characteristics, reduced lean body mass, weakness or fatigue, reduced sexual desire/drive, inability to have/maintain an erection, etc.) and confirmed by laboratory tests carried out in the same laboratory.

TESTOGEL is not recommended for:
– The treatment of male sterility or impotence,
– Children as no clinical information is available for boys under

18 years,
– By women because of possibly developing male

characteristics.
Androgens may increase the risk of an enlarged prostate gland (benign prostatic hypertrophy) or prostate cancer. Regular examinations of the prostate gland before the beginning and during therapy should be performed to follow your doctor‘s recommendations.

If you are suffering from severe heart, liver or kidney disease, treatment with TESTOGEL may cause severe complications in the form of water retention in your body sometimes accompanied by congestive heart failure (fluid overload in the heart).

Testosterone may cause a rise in blood pressure. TESTOGEL should therefore be used with caution if you are suffering from high blood pressure.

Worsening of breathing problems during sleep have been reported during treatment with testosterone in some people, particularly those who are very overweight or are already suffering from breathing difficulties.

If you have cancer that affects your bones, you may develop increased levels of calcium in your blood or urine. TESTOGEL may further affect these calcium levels. Your doctor may wish to check these calcium levels using blood tests during your treatment with TESTOGEL.

If you receive testosterone replacement treatment over long periods of time you may develop an abnormal increase in the number of red blood cells in your blood (polycythaemia). You will need regular blood tests to check that this is not happening.

TESTOGEL must be used with caution if you are suffering from epilepsy and/or from migraine as these conditions may be made worse.

In case of severe skin reactions, treatment should be reviewed and stopped if necessary.

The following may indicate you are taking too much of the product: irritability, nervousness, weight gain, frequent or prolonged erections. Report any of these to your doctor who will adjust the daily dose of TESTOGEL.

Before starting treatment your doctor will perform a full examination. He/she will need to take blood samples on 2 visits to measure your levels of testosterone before you are given this medicine. You will have regular check-ups (at least once a year and twice a year if you are elderly or an at risk patient) during treatment.

Possible transfer of testosterone

During close and relatively long periods of skin contact testosterone may be transferred to another person unless you cover the treated area. This could cause your partner to show the signs of increased testosterone such as more hair on the face and body and a deepened voice. It may cause changes in the menstrual cycle of women. Wearing clothes covering the application area or showering before contact protects against such transfer.

The following precautions are recommended:
* wash your hands with soap and water after applying the gel, * cover the application area with clothing once the gel has

dried,
* take a shower before intimate contact.

If you believe testosterone has been transferred to another person (woman or child)

* wash the area of skin which may have been affected immediately with soap and water,

* report any signs such as acne or changes in the growth or pattern of hair on your body or face to your doctor.

To make sure no-one else is accidentally put at risk you should leave a long period of time between applying TESTOGEL and making contact. You should also either wear a T-shirt during times of close contact to cover the area where TESTOGEL has been applied or bathe or shower before making contact.

You should preferably wait at least 6 hours between applying the gel and taking a bath or shower. If you occasionally need to bathe or shower between 1 and 6 hours after applying the gel it should not significantly change the effects of your treatment.

Taking or using other medicines

Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even those not prescribed, but particularly oral anticoagulants (used to thin the blood), insulin or corticosteroids. These particular medicines may lead to your dose of TESTOGEL being adjusted.

Tostran Gel is applied to clean dry skin on the abdomen or on the inner thighs (half the dose on each inner thigh); it's recommended that both of these parts of the body are used on different days. It should not be applied to the genitals. The gel should be applied once a day, at about the same time of day; preferably in the morning. If you have a bath or shower in the morning, the gel should be applied after you have washed and dried the skin, not before you have washed: it's recommended that you do not wash the area for at least 6 hours after the gel has been applied, otherwise the amount of testosterone absorbed by the body will be reduced.

Before using Tostran Gel for the first time, the pump needs to be primed, by depressing the piston 8 times. Any gel that is dispensed should be discarded. This only needs doing once for each canister; the canister should then be kept upright while it's in use.

The normal daily starting dose is 3g of gel (60mg of testosterone; 6 depressions of the Tostran pump). Sometimes a higher or lower dose is recommended by the doctor, depending on the response and your general health. The amount used each day should not exceed 4g of gel (80mg of testosterone; 8 depressions of the pump).

The required amount of gel should be put on to one finger, and then rubbed in gently to the abdomen or the inner thighs as above. The hands should then be washed, and dressing can continue after the gel has dried on the skin which usually only takes a few minutes.

The patient information leaflet gives more detail about how the gel should be applied to the skin.

Preventing the gel transferring on to other people

There is a chance that the gel - and therefore testosterone - can be transferred from one person to another by skin contact with the parts of the body that the gel was rubbed in to. This can cause side effects in people who have made contact in this way, even if it is a small amount of contact but over a long period of time. It is important to prevent this happening, especially where contact with pregnant women or children is likely. The product leaflet gives details about how to do this, but briefly, you should wash your hands after applying the gel, cover the application site with clothing after the gel has dried, and shower before any such contact is anticipated (such as sexual contact).

Tostran Gel contains testosterone, which is the principal "androgen" (male) hormone in the body, responsible for the development and maintenance of male characteristics in the body. It is produced by both men and women, in the testicles and ovaries respectively, but in much greater amounts are made in the male body.

Testosterone replacement therapies such as Tostran Gel are intended for use by men who have been diagnosed with low testosterone levels and who have clinical symptoms of the deficiency. These therapies should not be used by men who have testosterone levels within the normal range because it may cause more side effects without any therapeutic benefits.

Testosterone replacement therapies can be used at the same time as medicines for erectile dysfunction if necessary (such as Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra).

Tostran Gel is presented in a canister containing 60g of gel. Each press of the canister piston delivers half a gram of gel, containing 10mg of testosterone.

Like all medicines, Tostran (testosterone) Gel can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Side effects that are considered to be common include a worsening of existing high blood pressure, changes in hair distribution, swelling of the extremities, enlargement of the breast tissue (gynaecomastia), changes to some blood test results, and itching or rashes on the skin where the gel is applied. Side effects that have been linked to testosterone treatments in general include a increased risk of prostate cancer, electrolyte changes, lowered libido, anxiety, nausea, skin reactions such as increased hair growth or hair loss, muscle cramps, cholesterol level changes, and weight gain.

If you experience any changes in skin colour, unexplained nausea or vomiting, ankle swelling, changes in skin colour, any breathing disturbances including those associated with sleep, or too frequent or persistent erections of the penis, then stop using Tostran Gel and talk to your doctor.

For a full list of potential side effects and other important information, please read the patient leaflet provided in the pack before starting any course of treatment. It is very important to read the leaflet in full before starting to use Tostran (testosterone) Gel. The leaflet can be viewed online here:

There are some situations where Tostran (testosterone) Gel should be used with caution or would not be recommended, for example in women, males under the age of 18 or over 65, men with diagnosed or suspected cancer of any kind especially of the breast or prostate gland, benign prostatic hyperplasia ("BPH") or an enlarged prostate gland, symptoms of lower urinary tract infections, blood disorders including erythrocytosis, high blood pressure, heart failure or heart disease including angina, liver or kidney problems, epilepsy, migraines, sleep apnoea, and people who are allergic to any of the active or inactive ingredients.

The successful treatment of low testosterone levels can improve type 2 diabetes in some men, so if you have this condition you should monitor it closely and tell your doctor or diabetic nurse in case adjustments to your diabetes medicines are necessary.

Tell the doctor if you are taking any other medicines, either from your doctor or purchased from a pharmacy. Tostran (testosterone) Gel may not be suitable or may need to be used with caution if you are taking some medicines including warfarin and other anticoagulants, or steroids.

It's very important to give a full picture of your general health in the consultation, to make sure the doctor has all the information required to assess the safety and suitability of treatment for you.

About Low Testosterone

Low Testosterone Background

Low levels of testosterone in men is also known as hypogonadism. Testosterone is a hormone produced mainly in the testicles. Testosterone is responsible for the development of the male characteristics during puberty as well as maintaining adult bodily functions including, sexual functions, strength and energy levels and the amount of muscle and fat in the body. If the body is unable to produce enough testosterone, a man can experience a variety of unwanted symptoms. These include; depression, lack of libido and a reduction in sexual performance.

The levels of testosterone naturally begin to fall once a man is around the age of forty. On average the decrease is between 1-2% a year. If a man’s testosterone levels were not particularly high to begin with then this gradual age-related decline may make the effects seem more pronounced.

Low levels of testosterone can also be attributed to physical damage to the testicles. This damage can be the result of a viral infection, such as mumps or as a result of certain cancer treatments. Low testosterone levels can also be the result of changes in parts of the brain that are responsible for testosterone production. These changes can be the result of brain tumours, direct trauma or abuse of certain drugs, including anabolic steroids.

Another known cause of low testosterone levels is obesity. In the body fat cells naturally convert testosterone into oestrogen. If the levels of fat cells are excessive then more testosterone is being converted, resulting in lower levels.

Low Testosterone Symptoms

The resulting symptoms of low levels of testosterone include:

  • A low sex drive: Testosterone plays a pivotal role in a man’s sex drive (libido). Low levels will likely result in a drastic drop in his desire to have sex.
  • Erectile dysfunction: Testosterone is responsible for stimulating the male sex drive. A low level of testosterone is not solely responsible for erectile problems but it can be a contributing factor.
  • Low levels of testosterone can lead to a reduction in the size of the testicles.
  • Low levels of semen: Testosterone plays an important role in semen production. Low levels will result in a decrease in the amount of semen being produced.
  • Hair Loss: Testosterone plays a role in a man’s hair production. Hair loss is a natural part of ageing for the majority of men. However, someone presenting with low levels of testosterone may experience facial and bodily hair loss as well.
  • Feelings of fatigue and a lack of energy: It is common for men with low levels of testosterone to experience a lack of energy or chronic feelings of fatigue.
  • Mood changes: A lack of the hormone testosterone can trigger similar mood changes in men to that which women experience going through the menopause. These symptoms include; irritability, depression and a lack of concentration or focus.
  • A reduction in muscle mass: Testosterone plays an important role in the strengthening and building of muscles in men. Low levels of testosterone can make it difficult for men to maintain and build muscle.
  • Increase in body fat: Men presenting with low levels of testosterone often experience increased levels of body fat. It is believed the genes responsible for controlling the body fat percentage are also responsible for the circulation of testosterone.
  • Reduction in bone mass: Testosterone plays an important role in the strengthening and production of bones. Men presenting with low levels of testosterone are more prone to breaks and fractures. Especially in the hips, feet, ribs and wrists.

Low Testosterone Diagnosis

Your GP may perform a blood test so that your testosterone levels can be measured. If the result suggest a testosterone deficiency, you may be referred to a hormone specialist known as an endocrinologist. Once the specialist has confirmed the diagnosis then you may be prescribed a form of testosterone replacement treatment to help counter the low levels in your system.

Low Testosterone Treatment

If low testosterone or hypogonadism has been diagnosed then it is possible treat the condition with hormone replacement therapy. This treatment is designed to bring the body’s testosterone levels back to normal. The result will alleviate the symptoms of hypogonadism and the associated sexual problems.

Low testosterone treatments comes in a variety of forms. It is important to discuss your options with your doctor before deciding upon which treatment is the most appropriate. Testosterone replacement preparations are available in, gels (Testim), capsules, patches, implants and buccal tablets.

A popular and effective form of treatment is Testim Gel. This external preparation is applied to the skin at the same time each morning to the shoulders and upper arms. Testim Gel is best applied after your morning shower when skin is both clean and dry.

Low Testosterone Prevention

Testosterone levels naturally decline as men grow older. Unfortunately, it isn’t something that can be prevented using self-help techniques. If you experiencing any of the associated symptoms of low testosterone levels, it is recommended to seek medical advice to discuss appropriate treatment.
